The first day on a new job can be met with much excitement! There is the prospect of fresh opportunities, new colleagues and maybe even a boost to your pay packet. But, in the lead up – you may also get a serious case of the jitters.
Oh yes, we’ve all felt it – through the excitement of starting a new job, first day butterflies are pretty common. There are some things you can do to help smooth the way however, so here are our top tips to help you navigate the first day without any (or at least minimal) hiccups.
The charm offensive
As the new kid on the block, your new colleagues are likely to watch you with a David Attenborough-like inquisitiveness. Make a great first impression by laying on the charm and treating the first day as a job interview. Yes, you’ve already landed the role but for most of the people you come into contact with, this will be the first time you’ve met.
Style status
It may pay to make your wardrobe selection at least a day in advance to avoid any last minute fashion freak outs. Even if your new role is in a more casual work environment, keep it conservative (with flashes of your personal style) to start with and begin to branch out into more adventurous attire once you’ve got a good idea of the style status quo.
Culturally sensitive
To help you get an understanding of what makes your new workplace tick, listen carefully and pay attention to what goes on around you. You’ll be surprised by how much you can pick up on about the company culture, internal office politics and appropriate office etiquette.
Finally, just remember – no one will expect you to know everything on day one, and others like to feel useful, so ask for help if you need it and accept any offers of help that come your way.
