What's it like to be an Accounts Assistant?
Accounts Assistants are junior members of a financial team within a business. They help more senior Financial Accountants with the financial management of a company. Accounts Assistants will need good financial knowledge and be able to use a variety of accounting software and data entry programs. Accounts Assistants may work part time or full time, and although they will usually work regular office hours, they may need to take on more work during busy times in the financial year, such as just before or after taxes are due.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing and processing payments and invoices.
- Reconciling accounts and expenditures.
- Preparing financial statements and budgets, including profit and loss statements.
- Supporting financial practitioners and senior staff members as required, which may include processing documentation related to taxation, financial reporting, operating budgets, quotes and inventory adjustments.
How to become an Accounts Assistant
Accounts Assistants usually need a certificate, diploma or degree in accounting.
Complete a relevant qualification. This could be a Certificate in Business (Accounting Support Services) (Level 4), Diploma in Business (Accounting) (Level 5), Bachelor of Accounting or Bachelor of Business majoring in accounting.
To work your way up from an Accounts Assistant to a Financial Accountant/Chartered Accountant, you’ll need three years of work experience and a diploma or degree. These more senior roles typically offer better salaries and greater career opportunities.
