What's it like to be an Air Traffic Controller?
An Air Traffic Controller (Kaiwhakahaere Huarahi Rererangi) specialises in managing the flow of aircraft through airspace, guiding pilots during takeoff and landing, and monitoring aircraft as they travel. They maintain safety standards for air traffic, aim to minimise delays and coordinate flight paths to prevent collisions. This role requires strong focus in high-pressure situations, as well as the ability to make quick decisions.
Tasks and duties
- Directing aircraft efficiently and safely by organising their altitude, speed and route.
- Using radio, telephones or computers to communicate to pilots regarding takeoff, cruising altitude and landing.

- Staying updated on weather conditions, airport status and other information vital to planning safe flights.
- Notifying other relevant personnel about emergencies or problems that arise during flights, including technical failures or weather conditions.
- Maintaining records of communication with pilots during flights, and instructions given for future reference or review.
