Practice Nurse
What's it like to be a Practice Nurse?
Practice Nurses provide a range of healthcare services which can include assessing, advising, educating and treating patients, as well as supporting doctors. Their responsibilities may also extend to immunisations, wound care, discussing and reviewing test results with patients, advising on preventative care and offering women’s health services. Some Practice Nurses may carry out minor medical procedures.
Tasks and duties
- Supporting doctors with immunisations, care plans and common health assessments.
- Assisting doctors with small procedures, wound care and chronic disease management plans.
- Updating patient files and records.
- Overseeing inventory and ordering supplies.
- Communicating procedures, results and care plans to patients.
How to become a Practice Nurse
To become a Practice Nurse you will need a mix of qualifications and experience.
Complete a three-year Te Kaunihera Tapuhi o Aotearoa Nursing Council of New Zealand-approved Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent.
Apply to the Nursing Council for registration and sit the State Final Examination.
Consider starting off in a general nursing role to gain experience.
