What's it like to be a Recruitment Consultant?
A Recruitment Consultant (Kaitohutohu Whiwhi Kaimahi) sources candidates via advertising and their own networks, to fill vacant job roles on behalf of employers. They assess CVs, screen and interview applicants for roles, create short lists for employers, and can help negotiate pay and conditions. A Recruitment Consultant usually works independently or for a consultancy. Some large organisations have their own internal recruitment departments where Recruitment Consultants can work.
Tasks and duties
- Arranging for advertising of job vacancies in a wide range of media.
- Head hunting, networking, and using CV searching techniques to find relevant candidates.
- Reviewing and assessing CVs and preparing them for submission to clients.
- Managing interviews, screening candidates and running background checks.
- Creating a short-list of candidates for the client.
- Briefing candidates about the responsibilities, salary and benefits of the job in question.
- Undertaking negotiations on terms and conditions of employment.
- Developing a good understanding of client companies, their industry, what they do and their work culture and environment.
- Negotiating pay and salary rates and finalising arrangements between client and candidates.
- Maintaining personnel records and associated human resource information systems.
How to become a Recruitment Consultant
You can become a Recruitment without formal study, however some employers prefer candidates with a tertiary qualification.

Consider completing tertiary study such as a one-year certificate or diploma in human resources (Level 4 to 6), or a three-year Bachelor of Business, or Bachelor of Human Resources.

Secure an entry level role in human resources or as a Graduate Recruitment Consultant or a Candidate Manager to build experience.

Work your way up to a Recruitment Consultant role.

Consider advancing your skills with ongoing study relevant to the area of recruitment you work in, such as law or finance.
