We're busting job myths: here's the truth.

All kinds of theories exist about how to land a job. But a lot of it’s outdated advice – or just plain myth. So how do we sort fact from fiction? With high-octane, heavy-duty experiments, of course.
SEEK joined forces with Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters fame to tackle job-hunting myths.
With sparks, screeching tyres and feats of skill – plus an animatronic robot – we uncovered some surprising truths. Buckle up and watch the episodes below.
Myth: You can't get a job without experience
Experience counts for a lot...right? A whopping 75% of New Zealanders believe they can’t get a job without experience1. But is that really true? Sparks fly as Jamie Hyneman drills into this theory, with the help of Alex Apollonov, famous for his engineering feats on YouTube.
It turns out 53% of job ads in New Zealand don't include any screening questions about having experience in similar roles2. The takeaway: you might suit more jobs than you know. Why not see where your skills can take you?

Myth: It’s not what you know, it’s who you know
Can connections really land you a job? Well, 68% of New Zealanders believe ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’1. It’s pedal to the metal as Jamie Hyneman pits professional racing driver Courtney Prince against Jethro Mclean, Jamie Hyneman Centre employee (and friend of Jamie).
The truth is 15% of employers made their most recent placement through word-of-mouth3. So, you’re more likely to find the right job via SEEK than your friend’s cousin’s basketball teammate.
