What's it like to be a Financial Analyst?
A Financial Analyst supports an organisation’s financial performance by monitoring, interpreting and reporting on budgets, and revenues. A Financial Analyst uses financial modelling and analysis to create business cases, optimise efficiency of the organisation, and maximise revenue.
Tasks and duties
- Analyse current and past financial data and performance of a company in order to prepare reports for the management team.
- Predict future income and expenses to assist in determining budgets and provide advice about potential areas of improvement.
- Monitor financial movements of a company and broader financial markets so as to make relevant recommendations about ways to improve financial growth.
How to become a Financial Analyst
Most Financial Analysts have at least a bachelor degree or higher.
Complete a bachelor degree in finance, accounting, economics, business administration, commerce or a related field, which usually takes four years.
Join relevant professional organisations such as Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) or the CFA Society of New Zealand.
Secure an internship or graduate role to gain industry experience.
Do continuing professional development to to keep up-to-date with changes in legislation and industry.
Consider becoming a Chartered Accountant, which some roles require.
Some Financial Analysts go on to complete further education such as a Master of Business Administration or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification.
