What's it like to be a Facilities Manager?
A Facilities Manager (Kaiwhakahaere Whakaurunga) is responsible for the daily operations of commercial properties. They ensure compliance with health and safety and environmental regulations, monitor the facility’s condition, plan maintenance, and manage contractors and support staff. Facilities Managers sometimes need knowledge of relevant laws and regulations in addition to problem-solving and administrative skills. They work in facilities such as large offices, leisure centres, universities, airports and government properties.
Tasks and duties
- Planning and overseeing the operational activities of a building or commercial facility, such as a shopping mall, hotel or stadium.

- Planning and coordinating the use of a facility for special functions such as conferences.

How to become a Facilities Manager
You can become a Facilities Manager without qualifications, but many employers prefer candidates with a mix of experience and training.
Complete a relevant qualification, such as a Diploma in Facilities Management (Level 5). This typically takes one year of full-time study.
Secure a traineeship to build experience.
Alternatively, consider completing a bachelor degree majoring in management, commerce or business. This typically takes three years of full-time study and may provide broader career options.
With several years of experience and a qualification, you could specialise in an area of commercial property management such as asset management or infrastructure planning.
