What's it like to be an IT Manager?
IT Managers manage the implementation and operation of an organisation’s technology resources. This includes computer networks, mobile devices and other networked devices. They manage IT security, plan and manage software development projects and work with other IT professionals, suppliers and vendors. IT Managers sometimes need budgeting and project management skills in addition to strong IT knowledge. They work for IT consultancy companies and in the IT departments of organisations.
Tasks and duties
- Managing information technology and computer systems, including maintenance and upgrades.
- Managing a team of IT staff.
- Designing, developing, implementing and coordinating IT systems, policies and procedures.
- Ensuring data security, network access and backup systems.
- Identifying problematic areas and implementing strategic solutions.
- Educating staff on the proper use of IT systems.
How to become an IT Manager
You usually need a degree and extensive experience to become an IT Manager.
Complete a bachelor degree majoring in IT, computer science or a related field. This usually takes three years of full-time study.
Consider completing a postgraduate qualification, such as a Master of Information Technology. Alternatively, you can upskill by completing industry certifications in IT project management or related fields.
