What's it like to be an Accounts Administrator?
Accounts Administrators are responsible for payments and other financial tasks in an organisation. They review and reconcile financial information, manage payments owing to or owed by a business and maintain records of receipts and invoices. They may also complete other bookkeeping tasks. Accounts Administrators need to be detail-focused and have some knowledge of accounting software.
Tasks and duties
- Reviewing and verifying invoices for goods or services.
- Processing bank deposits.
- Reconciling financial statements.
- Using financial software and spreadsheets.
- Communicating with suppliers, customers and third-party vendors regarding invoices and payment terms.
- Managing and escalating disputes and resolutions.
- Recordkeeping and archiving.
How to become an Accounts Administrator
You can become an Accounts Administrator without a qualification, but many employers prefer candidates with some training and experience.
Complete a qualification, such as a New Zealand Certificate in Business (Accounting Support Services) (Level 4). This can be completed online or in person.
Alternatively, complete a bachelor degree majoring in accounting, finance or a related field. This typically takes three years of full-time study and may provide broader career options.
Develop your skills using Excel and other accounting software.
With experience and a bachelor degree, you could consider becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA), or Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA). These titles require registrations and postgraduate study.
